We built a mobile app that tripled repeat purchase rate

The Reorder Problem

Returning customers generate 60% of revenue for most DTC brands. The economics are straightforward: acquiring a new customer costs five to seven times more than retaining an existing one. If your product is consumable (supplements, pet food, skincare, coffee), your business depends on customers reordering easily and often.

Most brands treat mobile as a responsive version of their website. Same pages, same checkout flow, same login process, just smaller. On a phone, that means typing an email and password on a tiny keyboard, navigating a product catalog designed for desktop, and filling out payment details on a form that barely fits the screen.

Every one of those friction points is an opportunity for the customer to give up and reorder from a competitor with a better mobile experience, or just forget entirely. For a supplement brand we worked with, 68% of their traffic was mobile, but only 31% of their revenue came from mobile. The gap represented hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual revenue lost to friction.

Three Features That Move the Number

We tested a lot of features during development. Custom homepages, loyalty point displays, referral widgets, content feeds. Most of them made the app more interesting without making it more useful for reordering. Three features accounted for nearly all of the repeat purchase lift.

The first is push notifications tied to purchase history. Not promotional blasts. Replenishment reminders that know when a customer is likely running low based on their actual purchase timing. A customer who buys a 30-day supply of vitamin D every 28 days gets a reminder on day 26. The notification says "Running low on Vitamin D3? Reorder with one tap." and opens directly to a pre-filled cart. These notifications convert at 8-12%, compared to 1-2% for generic promotional pushes, because they arrive at the moment of genuine need.

The second is biometric login. Face ID or fingerprint authentication eliminates the password entirely. The customer opens the app and they're already logged in, with their account, their order history, and their saved payment methods ready. This sounds like a small thing, but password friction is the single biggest drop-off point in mobile commerce. Removing it cuts the path from "I need to reorder" to "done" from 2-3 minutes to under 15 seconds.

The third is saved payment methods with one-tap reorder. The customer sees their last order, taps "Reorder," confirms with Face ID, and the order is placed. Two taps and a glance. No cart page, no checkout form, no shipping address entry. The app remembers everything from the last order and assumes the customer wants the same thing unless they tell it otherwise.

What We Built

The app was built natively for iOS and Android. We considered cross-platform frameworks but chose native because the biometric authentication, push notification handling, and payment integration all work more reliably with platform-native APIs. The performance difference is noticeable on older devices, and supplement brands have a broad customer demographic that includes people using three-year-old phones.

The reorder flow is the core of the app. The home screen shows the customer's most recent orders with a "Reorder" button next to each one. Tapping it pre-fills the cart with the same items at current prices. If a product is out of stock or discontinued, the app says so before the customer reaches checkout and suggests the closest alternative.

Smart reorder timing runs in the background. The app tracks the interval between each customer's purchases of each product and builds a consumption profile. If someone orders magnesium every 25 days on average, the app starts surfacing a reorder prompt on day 23. The timing adjusts over time as the customer's pattern changes. If they start ordering every 30 days instead of 25, the reminder shifts accordingly.

The subscription integration works alongside the reorder flow rather than replacing it. Customers who prefer subscriptions manage them through the app with the same biometric authentication and one-tap interactions. Customers who prefer manual reordering get the push notification flow. Both paths optimize for the same thing: reducing the time between "I need this" and "it's ordered."

Results

The brand launched the app to their existing customer base with a simple email campaign. No paid acquisition for app installs. Within 90 days, 22% of their active customers had installed the app, driven primarily by the promise of faster reordering.

Repeat purchase rate among app users tripled compared to mobile web users. The average time between orders dropped from 34 days to 27 days. Revenue per customer per quarter increased by 41%. The biggest factor was the reduction in "forgotten reorders," the orders that customers intended to place but didn't because the process was too inconvenient at the moment they thought of it.

Push notification opt-in was 74%, significantly higher than typical marketing opt-ins, because the notifications were framed as reorder reminders rather than promotions. Customers understood the value proposition: the app would remind them when they were running low, and they could reorder in two taps.

Who Should Build an App

A native commerce app makes sense when three conditions are true. Your product is consumable with a regular repurchase cycle. More than 40% of your orders are repeat purchases. And your monthly revenue is above $30K, which is the threshold where the app development cost (typically $40K-$80K) pays back within 6-9 months through increased retention and order frequency.

If your product is a one-time purchase, a mobile website with a fast checkout is enough. If your repeat purchase rate is below 30%, focus on the product and marketing before investing in retention infrastructure. The app amplifies existing repeat purchase behavior. It doesn't create it from scratch.
